Coyne defines the following units of story (from small to big):2

  1. The beat
  2. The scene
  3. The sequence
  4. The act
  5. The subplot
  6. The global story

Ingermanson defines them as follows (from big to small):3

  1. Top layer: storyline and three-act structure
  2. Middle layer: synopsis, scene list, and scene
  3. Lowest layer: action, dialogue, and more
