Storylets

Part of Interactive fiction.

Emily Short on storylets:

Storylet systems are a way of organizing narrative content with more flexibility than the typical branching narrative.

There is also the concept of quality-based narratives (QBN). In this case, quality refers to “a distinctive attribute or characteristic possessed by someone or something” (that is what the Oxford Dictionary says). It is not clear whether storylets and QBN are the same or not, and if not, how much overlap there is between them.

Emily Short on “qualities”:

Qualities are numerical variables that can go up or down during play, and represent absolutely everything from inventory (how many bottles of laudanum are you carrying?) to skills (what is your Dangerous skill level?) to story progress (how far have you gotten in your relationship to your Aunt?).
