Webs (acting exercise)

Up: Acting exercises

Purpose: concentrate, listen, memorise.

Setup: Players stand in a circle.

First layer

Setup:

  1. The first player moves to another player, taps them on the shoulder, and takes their place.
  2. That second player now moves to another player (who hasn’t played yet), taps them on the shoulder, and takes their place.
  3. Repeat for each player, until everyone has swapped places exactly once.

After the setup, all players know who replaces them, and whom they replace.

The exercise: Repeat the setup but with exactly the same assignment of who takes whose place.

Second layer

Setup:

  • The first player says “one.”
  • The player (counter-)clockwise next to them says “two.”
  • Repeat until the last player has said their number.

After this setup, everyone is assigned a unique number.

The exercise: Begin the first layer (swapping places). After ten seconds, begin the second-layer exercise: repeat the setup but with exactly the same assignment of numbers.

Third and further layers

Consecutive layer are similar to the second layer, but not with numbers:

  • Name
    • of the player who’s speaking
    • of the player whose attention you want
  • Animal noise
  • A ball (soft, e.g. juggling ball)
