Ensuring safety in an acting class

Up: Acting

These are my (unrefined) thoughts on ensuring physical and psychological safety in an acting class.

Class check-in:

  • How are we doing physically on a 1-10 scale?
  • How are we doing mentally on a 1-10 scale?

Scene start:

  • Traffic light exercise: Before any scene that potentially involves touch, make each actor asses where they are OK to be touched (green) and where not (red). Consent last not longer than the duration of the scene.
  • Allow actors to pass on an exercise or scene, with no explanation given.

De-roling (do this explicitly):

  • Shake if off
  • Brush off
  • Clothing marker: Connect the role to a worn piece of clothing; removing the piece of clothing is de-roling.
  • Whole-group de-roling exercise
