Stage directions

Up: Acting

Somewhat overlapping with or confused for parentheticals.

Cross them out or not? The opinions are divided.

One useful way to look at it is to not cross out stage directions that affect the scene. Compare these;

                    DENIS
                (angrily)
           Don’t interrupt me!
                    DENIS
                (putting cup down on table)
           Don’t interrupt me!

If the cup plays a role later in the scene/script, and if the presence of the cup on the table is important, then the “putting cup down on table” stage direction cannot be crossed out.
