Directing Actors

Judith Weston, Directing actors: creating memorable performances for film and television (Studio City, CA: M. Wiese Productions, 1996).

Up: Acting

I’m not a director (and barely an actor), but it’s still a relevant book.

Some takeaways:

  • Avoid result direction and adjectives. Instead, use verbs (physical, e.g. charm, challenge), facts (e.g. he opens the door, puts his jacket on your shoulders), images (e.g. a door slamming shut), events (???), and physical tasks (e.g. rearrange the pantry during a conversation).

  • Encourage actors to actively listen.
