How to approach a script

This is my approach for tackling a scene/play/script — taking into account that I am a total amateur:

  1. Read the entire play/script.

  2. Figure out the given circumstances.

  3. For my own character:
    1. Highlight my lines.
    2. Highlight anything that other characters say about me.
  4. Figure out my overall objective.

  5. For each scene:
    1. Figure out the given circumstances.
    2. Figure out possible scene objectives.
    3. Figure out possible obstacles.
    4. Determine possible stakes.
    5. Determine possible choices.
    6. Determine the beats.
    7. Figure out the moment before.
    8. Determine/inhabit the layout of the space.
